Community art project travels to seniors home

Last week, a group of seniors at Melville Heights got their hands dirty for a local art project that is going to decorate the Spryfield community centre.

This project is called Waterfalls. Everyone who participates will create an object out of clay, with the theme of "water." Whatever way water can be interpreted is fine. The coordinating artist, Miro Davis, is trying to get as many people from the community to participate as possible.

The seniors at Melville Heights had an amazing time. Their creations ranged from snowmen to Sidney Crosby, to abstract objects that didn't mean anything in particular. I asked one spirited lady what the abstract object she made represented, and she replied, "I don't really know...it kind of looks like boobs!"

All these clay objects are going to be used as moulds for clear plastic. Then Miro will take the plastic casts and hang them in the community centre, suspended from silver tubing with lighting running behind them. The light will bounce and reflect off these hundreds of water drops, creating the image of a 15-foot-tall water fall.

If you want to make a water drop, you can get involved by calling the community centre at 477-9840.
