Podcamp Halifax 3.0

jm3 RT @laurenoostveen: Average FB user is now 53 years old. Twitter = 39. Myspace user just 16. #podcamphfx

If the above sentence appears to be garble to you, that probably means you aren't accustomed to Twitter. What it means is loosely translated as this:

Lauren Oostveen, a Twitter user, attended Podcamp Halifax. While she was there, she learned that the average Facebook user is now 53 years old, the average Twitter user is 39, and the average Myspace user is just 16 years old.

Wowsers! That's a lot older than I would have guessed, with the exception of Myspace...but that was kind of a no-brainer.

Podcamp Halifax went off successfully yesterday. I learned many interesting things, at my own session and at other people's. Some of them stick in my memory:

-Twitter is the best platform for instant news during a crisis, e.g. the fires in Purcell's Cove last spring. We guessed at a lag time of about 30 minutes between tweets appearing and the time the news organizations arrived on the scene.
-When blogging based on a private conversation, it is more ethical to make a person aware that you are using their words. However, if the conversation deals with public material, it is probably fair game. Material from a public meeting is always fair game: our journalism session's consensus
-Journalist bloggers should attempt to verify their sources, but we admit that blogs are not held to the same standards of reporting as a full-blown news article
-The average age for Facebook and Twitter is increasing
-Newfoundland tends to lag behind the rest of Atlantic Canada in social media...best guess is because they place more emphasis on real live person contact
-The best social media policy is to be nothing but yourself
-Self-promotion is not necessarily a bad thing, but be open about it

  1. Wow indeed!! Those stats are so surprising! I have twitter but have yet to really use it...maybe soon?

I have a friend in Newfoundland and that's so true! His office contains no cell phone reception.

  2. Just to note (and caveat - I wasn't at the presentation) - Giles Crouch (the speaker) was doing a presentation about Atlantic Canadians' use of social media.

  3. I was at Giles' overview of social media in Atlantic Canada (although some of the points that stick in my mind are not from his session) It was a good way to start the day. Was quite surprised by his breakdown of which ages are using which tools! The thing that I find so interesting about Twitter is that it's endlessly flexible as to how you want to use it...

  4. How did your community journalism session go?

  5. Thought it went well. People were quiet at the beginning but seemed quite willing to discuss, which was great.
